Books - Cocaine
Written by Lester Grinspoon

THIS EDITION contains a new chapter in which we have attempted to summarize the major developments in cocaine research and cocaine use since Cocaine: A Drug and Its Social Evolution was first published. The most important development is that cocaine use and abuse have spread much more widely than was anticipated by us and by most other researchers studying the question in 1976. Cocaine has become a greater social problem than at any time in its previous history, with ramifications in all areas of American life. We have briefly reviewed new findings on coca-leaf chewing and the effects of chronic cocaine abuse and have added a discussion of the new and dangerous practice of smoking cocaine, or freebasing. We have also considered the evidence on who the new cocaine users are and on which types of treatment may be found effective for chronic cocaine abuse. Works dealing with all these issues have been added to the "Selected Bibliography."
